tool window color cant be changed

Post by Jack »

When the option to highlight the cursor line is on, the cursor line in the tool window is yellow text on white background which is impossible to read. I tried editing the colors, but can't find a way. I open Options menu, Tools Options... menu item, then select coloring tab. When I attempt to change the Display View Combo, I get an error from Zeus with an explanation how to do this. I followed the explanation as best as I could, but keep ending back to the same error dialog. How do you change the colors of the tools window? Thanks!

When I attempt to change the Display View Combo, I get an error from Zeus with an explanation how to do this.
What message are you seeing?

NOTE: For any message boxes you can use ctrl+c to copy the text for that message shown.

Also what version of Zeus are you running as shown in the Help about box?

Hi Jussi,

I am using Zeus(x64)-Version 3.99a-Beta5. Here's the error. I believe I did what this error says but can't get it to work.

---------------------------
Zeus (x64)
---------------------------
You can't change the colors for the other Display Views using this document type.

To change the colors for these other views use the Options, Document Types menu and edit the Coloring options in the Zeus Document Type.

OK

My first suggestion would be trying the latest version of Zeus found on the download page: https://www.zeusedit.com/download.html

There is an official Zeus 3.99a version, so that should work better that the beta version you are currently running.

NOTE: Before running any new Zeus installer it is always recommended you make a backup of your current Zeus installation, just in case.

Hi Jussi,

I am now running 3.99a, but I am still unable to to edit the colors in the tools dialog. If I attempt to select Tool Output view for the Display View combo, I get the error. I think the error message is saying to leave it as Document View, but enter these options from Options menu, Tools options... menu item. When I do that, the document view color selections don't match the tools window, nor do they change the tools window colors.

It sounds like the error you are seeing is the one shown below:
color-error.png
color-error.png (22.5 KiB) Viewed 660619 times
What that error message is saying is you can't configure the other color views using this document type.

This message is actually a new message box and it is there because if it allowed you to change the tool, compiler and project colors they would not have any effect, hence the reason that action is blocked.

As the message says, to change the tool, compiler and project colors you need to edit the Zeus Document Type.

Now you can use the Options Document Types menu to do this, but an easier way would be as follows:

1. Tools, Utilities, Current Directory menu
2. Right click on the output window produced and select the Properties menu.

As caption of the dialog will indicate, you are now be editing the Zeus Document Type.

Here is how I recommend you change your Tool output colors:
  • Use the Tool menu to edit the Zeus Document Type as described earlier.
  • Select the Tool Output View and change the coiors to suit.
  • Once you have the colors defined use the export button to export the colors to a text file.
  • Import the export file and using the Yes option apply the colors display views.
  • That import will update the Imported Scheme so when it is all working use the Save As option to save the color scheme. You need to do this save as, because if you reimport any color file it will overright that import scheme.

Hi Jussi,

I am unable to get this to work. Your 2nd step of selecting the Tool Output View results in the same error dialog. I am looking at a dialog with the title

Properties [Zeus Document type] and the Coloring tab. There are multiple ways to get to this and I get the same behavior no matter how I get here.

I updated to the newest Zeus a few weeks ago and the version I had then allowed me to change the tool window colors. I'm not sure why it is so difficult now, but none of your guidance seems to make it work for me.

I would suggest doing this:

1: Download the Zeus installer from the download page: https://www.zeusedit.com/download.html

2: Rename your current Zeus install out of the way.

3: Run a fresh install and see if the steps provided earlier work with this clean install.

This check will eliminate the possibility that your zConfig files have been corrupted in some way.

As a test I made a change to the tool line cursor to create a green cursor, using the dir command approach that I mention before.

The image below shows the results:

If you look at the white and blue rectangles in that image you can see the settings that I need to select, in order to make this change and you can also see the resulting green line cursor.

NOTE: In my case the tool window is using the Zeus Light Mode document type, only because I've previously used the Options, Color Schemes, Set Light Mode menu to change the editor to light mode.

If you have not used that menu then the tools will be configured to use the Zeus Document type instead.

My Zeus doesn't behave as you illustrate. Under Schemes in the color tag, mine says Default Colors. I change it to Zeus Light Mode but I still get the error dialog attempting to change the Display View. I then exited the dialog and selected Option menu, Color Scheme menu item. In the menu, there is a check mark next to white. I click on Zeus Lite Mode but nothing happens. The check mark stays on White.

I think you said in my mode, the tools window will follow the document options. When I change these the color for Zeus document, I see no change on the screen in the tools or build windows.

I just mention again that 3 - 4 weeks ago when I 1st upgraded Zeus, this tool window color updating worked fine. I've done a few beta updates and one release update since then. After each update, I copy my old config folder to the new install. Any chance this is a bug in the new software where an old config option is corrupting the newest software?

That suggests to me your configuration is broken.
I just mention again that 3 - 4 weeks ago when I 1st upgraded Zeus, this tool window color updating worked fine.

As mentioned earlier, a recent change was made to Zeus whereby a user could no longer change the tool colors in all document types and that change was made only because changing the tool colors in anything other than the Zeus Tool Document Type has no effect.

Now I suspect this is change is blocking you, because your Tool Document Type is somehow corrupt.
Any chance this is a bug in the new software where an old config option is corrupting the newest software?
You read my mind :)

Zeus does attempt to upgrade zConfig files and in most cases this will work without issue and that means copying over the zConfig does works.

But it is almost impossible for this upgrade to anticipate every combination of possible user change and that means these automatic upgrades can also go wrong.

I suspect it has gone wrong in this case.

So this is what I would recommend:

1. Download the latest 3.99ab version from the download page (NOTE: This new version fixes a display issue with the file tab bar).

2. Backup the zConfig file produced by that new installation (i.e. make a copy of the folder)

3. Copy over your old zConfig files.

4. Copy back these Zeus Tool Document Type files from the zConfig backup folder.

Code: Select all

C:\Users\<User Id>\AppData\Local\Programs\Zeus (x64)\zConfig\

    Zeuszdbw-coloring.ext
    Zeuszdbw-general.ext
    Zeuszdbw-keywords.ext
    Zeuszdbw-tagger.ext
This will mean the Tool Document Type in place will now be the latest version and so no upgrade will be required.

Hi Jussi,

That fixed the issue. One very minor remain issue. In the window produced after running the Find In Files dialog, can you tell me which color categories adjust the line numbers and the file names?

Thanks!

These tool output details are identified by the patterns regular expressions defined in the Keywords section.

For the file name information, the pattern shown below identifies these output details:
zeus-patterns.png

As you can see from the image, this pattern is defined in the User Defined 4 and that corresponds to the color setting used to color this pattern.
