Not a working copy?

This is my first morning trying out AgentSVN x64 2.76 with VS2022 (and TortoiseSVN on Windows and Apache Subversion server on linux). Here's what I did:
  • Created a new, empty subversion repo on the server side
  • Started VS2022 and selected AgentSVN as my source control provider
  • Opened my solution (which contains 58 projects)
  • Use the VS2022 menu to add my solution to source control
When that finished, an error popped up, but I didn't have time to read it because Visual Studio shut down too quickly (on its own!)
Then I restarted VS2022, made sure that AgentSVN was my source control provider and opened my project, the output window was filled with messages like these (which I need to learn how to fix, please):

Notice that the same folder is listed twice each time, for whatever reason. Regardless, NOTHING has changed on my source drive -- unless the act of adding the solution/projects to source control also modified them. So they would seem to me to be exactly equivalent to what I expect a working copy to me.

I have tried closing and restarting VS2022 several times and every time I open the solution I see the same messages. Here's my version info (from VS2022 About), in case it is relevant (asvn64-v276.zip downloaded and installed today, plus TortoiseSVN-1.14.6.29673-x64-svn-1.14.3.msi, also downloaded today):

I just noticed that the log messages are not reporting the expected path. We use SUBST to 'create' an M: drive in the source folder where we will be working. This has always worked with other programs in the past. Apparently, AgentSVN (or maybe TortoiseSVN?) is being a little too smart and decoding M: into the mapped path instead of using it as intended. So, I believe that the log should show M:\ everywhere that it shows D:\M-agent\

I don't know if that is the problem or even A problem for AgentSVN/TortoiseSVN, but it looks wrong in the log and probably should show the working path (M:\) rather than whatever that drive letter might be mapped to. If someone insists the current behavior is necessary, then an option to show it the way it does now or to show it correctly (i.e. the actual path string being used by the IDE) would be nice.

One think to note is Agent SVN does not need Tortoise SVN to work, but it is a very useful tool to install.
Errors: svn: warning: W155007: '.' is not a working copy
This is a Subversion error message that tells the user the local folder does not contain a local working copy. For Subversion to work on a local machine, there needs to be a local working copy found in the folder.

This is analogous to Tortoise SVN showing a green tick on a folder inside Explorer. The folders with a green tick contain a local working copy, and those without the tick do not.

Now that describes and older version of Visual Studio, but MS-SCCI has not changed in decades, so the steps described in that tutorial are identical to the steps you need to perform in Visual Studio 2022.

I would recommend reading that tutorial. You could even try doing that tutorial word for word, just to get a feel for how Agent SVN works with Visual Studio.

Once you done that tutorial I'd recommend the following:
  1. Make a backup of your current folder containing the 58 projects. It is always good to have backups.
  2. Create a new empty folder, and copy your project and solution files into this folder (i.e. make a new copy of your projects)
  3. In the Agent SVN configuration dialog remove the link to the Subversion repo (cut the text and save it to notepad)
  4. Using Visual Studio to open the solution found in that new copy. This will fail because of the change made in the step before.
  5. Visual Studio will ask if you want to work offline or remove the binding. Choose the remove binding and save the changes made.
  6. Close Visual Studio and open Agent SVN and restore the link to the Subversion server. Also turn on the Agent SVN logging option and use the View Log button to open the log file. Make note of the log file location and empty the log file details.
  7. Start Visual Studio and open the solution.
  8. Use the Add Solution to source control menu option to add the solution to Subversion. Take note of any error messages you might see.
  9. Check the Subversion server to see if the files got added. If they failed, check the Agent SVN log file.
  10. If it worked, then turn of the Agent SVN logging as it is a performance drag.

Thank you for the link to the tutorial.

On my first try, I ignored the simplicity instruction and used these settings (mostly from another tutorial I'd found):

Unfortunately, some things have changed and Step 4 locked up VS2022.

But, I might have done something wrong in step 4 because the tutorial did not mention that the Repository Browser would appear. So I killed VS2022 and started over with the EXACT settings recommended in the tutorial...

This time an extra dialog appeared at the end of step 2 that tells me there is no Subversion repository at the location and asks if I'd like to create one. I said Yes. In step 3 I opened an existing solution that has no source control bindings and was gifted with the same 'not a working copy' warnings as shown in my OP. Also, many, but not all, of the projects in the solution are ALREADY showing the red check mark that indicates they are already in source control -- though I have not yet performed the step to add anything to my newly created repo. So once again, the tutorial is not matching what I am seeing. I cannot perform step 4 because the 'Add project to source control' option is not on the solution context menu this time. It appears that either VS2022 or AgentSVN decided to automatically add the project to source control without ANY input from me when I opened the solution.

At this point, I gave up. Can you start to see why I'm complaining that the documentation I'm finding doesn't match any of the current software?

Also, there is much more than a solution in what we would consider "the project repo". There are documentation folders, linux sources for associated embedded devices, and many other folders that Visual Studio doesn't use at all. There is also a 'tools' solution that is found within the folder tree used by the main project solution (because the tools share libraries and headers.) Our old (32 bit) MSSCC provider simply allowed us to add any files/folders we wanted and VS2019 (and earlier) just accessed the files it wanted by path/name. Clearly there is more "smart" (?) in AgentSVN and it is not helping me with what I want to do.

Oh, just for referenced, before searching and discovering AgentSVN, I had tried VisualSVN and it worked perfectly, exactly as I wanted ... except it was effectively impossible to have the locking checkout/checkin function (which we require) that AgentSVN offers. In theory it would do it, but I would need to add the needs-lock attribute to every file in every project in every solution (and everywhere else) one-by-one because every time I selected more than one file the ability to set attributes was removed from the menus.

I can certainly see your point and understand why you would not be interested in spending any more time in trying to make Agent SVN work with your Visual Studio setup.

Fortunately, it seems you've found VisualSVN which appears work well with your Visual Studio IDE.

Now, I've never used VisualSVN, but I believe it was specifically designed to work exclusively with Visual Studio so I can imagine it works well with that IDE.

PS: My one additional comment regarding your setup. I would change the configuration to leave the SVN Project Manager as blank as it is not required for the correct working of Agent SVN.

As that feature was added a very long time ago and it may well have a bug or two lurking.

If once configured and working, you could add back that configuration, just to see if that then creates a problem and then report that bug.
