Zeus IDE

I'm a long time Brief supporter as the greatest editor ever and am still looking for a Windows text editor that comes close to Brief. One thing I immediately look for is split windows - in Brief you can easily split the screen into several windows and view different files in each window. The only way to do this in Windows editors is to mess around with tiling - hardly the single keystroke it was in Brief and immediately you close one window you've got to redo the screen. I thought Zeus might be different from the raves, but no, it has all the same limitations as every other Windows editor.

Does anyone know what happened to Brief? I think Borland bought it, did they just dispose of it?

The reason Zeus is no different to every other Windows editor in this regard is exactly because it is a Windows editor.

Creating an unlimited number of split views feature is no simple task in itself, but it is made harder when the application must conform to the rules and limitations imposed by Windows itself. I am sure it can be done, but it is just not such a simple a task as it may seem

I think Borland still own Brief. I just hasn't changed in 15 years

The IDE with the old Borland C++ compiler ( versions 4.52 or 5.02 that I know of) support an arbitartary number of view splitting in a window and each view can be individually sized by dragging the pane bounndary. I miss that feature alot, but even without it, zeus is a far better editor than the Borland IDE's.
