FTP Directory in Navigator Window

Post by New User »

I am a new user of Zeus and am so far very impressed. However, I have two questions:

1) I use ftp editing very often. Is there a way to list ftp server directory listings in the Navigator window? I have used this in the past on other editors and found it very convenient when editing many files.

2) I hope this isn't a common question, but I've had problems on other editors. Can the keypad keys be programmed (scripted)? How about the numlock key?

Thanks for a great app!

Unfortunately this is not currently possible :(

Currently the only way to get a server directory listing is to use the File, Open URL menu and then use the browse button from the resulting dialog.
I have used this in the past on other editors and found it very convenient when editing many files.

One other option might be to use the Zeus Workspace feature. Just like any other file, Zeus is quite happy to have ftp files listed in the workspace and naturally once the files are in the workspace, you can double click on the file and it gets load from the ftp server.

To add a ftp file to the workspace, first open the ftp file then use the File, Add to Active Project menu option. In addition it is also very easy to manually create the Zeus workspace files. If you have a lot of files this is probably the quickest way to create the workspace.
Can the keypad keys be programmed (scripted)?
Yes, this is possible. For example the Brief and BriefEx keyboard mappings map several functions to these keypad keys. For more details take a look at binding macros to the keyboard.
How about the numlock key?

I am not sure why you would want to do this :) but I just ran a test and tried to bind the numlock key to enter keyboard function. Sure enough now when I hit the numlock key I get a new line so it looks like the answer is also yes.
Thanks for a great app!

Glad you like it :)

Jussi,

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I'm use to waiting for days for a reply.

I know it may seem strange to map to the numlock key, but I've always wanted to configure an editor to look like the old Vax edt editor. It used the keypad for a lot of the editing commands. It also used a key which is in the same position as the numlock key on a PC to perform certain functions. I don't know if this will be possible, but trying to emulate the edt editor will give me a chance to play with Zeus' scripting features.

Thanks again,

Hi JN,
I know it may seem strange to map to the numlock key, but I've always wanted to configure an editor to look like the old Vax edt editor.

Unless this editor uses a Vi like modal keyboard style, my gut feeling is it should be possible to get the emulation quite close. But if you run into any problems feel free to post as many questions as needed.
I don't know if this will be possible
I may have spoken a little soon :( I ran another test on the NumLock and it is true that Zeus can bind to this key, but even after making the binding the real NumLock state of the keyboard also changes. In other words Zeus has trapped the NumLock key but so too has the operating system. The result is the NumLock key ends up with dual functionality and I am guessing that this is not the functionality you are looking for :(

But the good thing is the remaining keypad keys should not cause any problems :)
but trying to emulate the edt editor will give me a chance to play with Zeus' scripting features.

When designing a new keybaord mapping a good place to start is to export one or more of the exisiting keyboard maps, using the Export button found using the Options Editor, Options menu and switching to the Keyboard section. This creates a text file that is easy to edit and can be re-import when you are ready to create the new mapping.

Also there are many hundreds of existing Zeus keyboard functions (see online help for details) that provide all sorts of functionality. Where possible it is best to use a keyboard function, and then fill in the holes using the Zeus scripting.
