native linux (or portable) version?

Post by ibi »

hi jussi,

any chances (or plans) of a native linux version of zeus?
or a (windows) portable version? (copying the files only works fine, but the reg-key and some settings are written to the registry)
a portable version without ide/compiler stuff with a lean size (10mb) would suffice. (like notepad++, but with (real) brief-keybindings)

i'm using zeus since 1999 (tested many other editors, none prevailed (mostly because of lack of brief keybindings)) and wouldn't mind to pay again for a decent linux version. :)

greetings from stuttgart, germany. :D

I have looked at trying to get Zeus on Linux on at least two occasions.

The real problem here is the Zeus code is pretty much all written in Win32, effectively making that port a full re-write :(

As to the portable version?

I'll take a little time to see what that might involve as that should be a little easier to achieve.

But with regard to the another Linux option there might be a light on the horizon :)

Based on this blog: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/wsl/20 ... -overview/

A Linux subsystem based on Ubuntu is coming to Windows 10 and this will allow users to edit files with their favorite Windows editors.

Cheers Jussi

if you're not using gtk or qt as framework it will be quite labour intensive, so i fully understand that you don't want to do it.

an easy way would be "repackaging" the current version with portableapps or winpenpack.

maybe starting with zeuslite as portableapp would be a good idea. (and being listed on portableapps.com gives a nice boost on discoverability and thus maybe new users for the full version :D)

i'll be leaving the windows-train at station 8.1 since i don't like anything about win10 (was insider since the first beta, uninstalled it at release). maybe i'll have 1-2 win10 n ltsb computers around, but my main OS will be ubuntu MATE. :)

BASH on windows is imho DOA. those who want BASH install linux, those who have linux use FISH. ;)
