Those vertical lines look like the line indentation markers.

Those are controlled at a per document type level so with the file active use the Options, Properties menu and in the General section turn off the Display line indents option.

While using your macro I did run into this issue. I fixed this with the following code change towards the top of the macro ;) # this macro expects to be passed at least two arguments if zeus.argc() < 2: return # ignore any un-named files if not zeus.is_named(): return Cheers Jussi

That does look like a bug, which, if confirmed should be fixed in the next release. One workaround would be to use a script attached to the file save trigger and have the script write the backup.
